Hamburg - German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine (TKMS), said Tuesday it would sell portions of three dockyards and would concentrate on defence vessels including submarines. Among the properties up for sale is a Hamburg dockyard which has built a series of ultra-luxury megayachts, including Eclipse, the 525-foot-plus vessel nearing completion for Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
TKMS said it was selling much of its dockyard in the port of Emden to Siag Schaaf Industrie AG, a maker of wind turbines, but it had suspended for the time being efforts to dispose of plants at Kiel, which assemble civilian vessels.
The decision does not affect TKMS warship and submarine-building operations in the three cities, including construction in Hamburg of four future frigates for the German Navy. Labour groups were angered by the announcement.
