Cairo - Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Tuesday stressed that diplomacy should be "the only way" to respond to Iran's nuclear programme. "We are going to follow closely the negotiations to start on the first of October," Moussa told reporters in Cairo. "It will be a long road, but dealing with Iran through diplomacy is important, essential and should be the only way."
Moussa was referring to a meeting scheduled for October 1 between Iran's top negotiator on its nuclear programme, Saeed Jalili, and diplomats from China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, the United States and the European Union. Yukiya Amano, the new head of the International Atomic Energy Agency is also scheduled to attend.
"Arab countries have formulated a consensual position," Moussa said. "The Middle East does not need any nuclear weapons programme."
"This also applies to Israel, in view of the fact that Israel is outside the realm of non-proliferation treaty," he stressed, adding that "Iran has the full right to benefit from peaceful uses of nuclear energy."
