Sydney - The first new bridge in Brisbane in 40 years is due to be named in honour of 1970s rock'n'roll band The Go-Betweens, founding member Robert Forster said Tuesday. "It's lovely that it's a bridge," Forster said. "I have always found bridges, no matter how they look, romantic and poetic."
Cited by U2 and other bands as an inspiration, the Brisbane rockers released the last of their 23 albums shortly before the death in 2006 of founding member Grant McLennan.
Australians competed to name the bridge, with the band responsible for the hit single Streets of Your Town winning twice as many votes as any other suggestion.
The Go-Betweens are not the first band to lend a name to infrastructure.
A Melbourne street is called AC/DC Lane after the still-going Sydney heavy metal outfit.
Perhaps the highest honour in the rock pantheon is John Lennon Airport in The Beatles' home city of Liverpool in northern England.
