Mexico to open Zapotecan city to tourists

Mexico City - Mexico's authorities are planning to make a city built by the Zapotecan civilisation accessible to the public for the first time next year. The city is located in the district of Santa Maria Atzompa, close to the civilisation's centre at Monte Alban in the state of Oaxaca. The city's central area was recently presented to journalists as part of an international conference and stretches for over two and a half square kilometres. It contains three areas used for religious rituals, which are surrounded by several buildings, as well as three ball courts. Atzompa was occupied from the seventh to the ninth centuries AD and according to experts was populated by the Zapotecan elite. When the site is opened it will be promoted as part of Monte Alban, the oldest and one of the most impressive Zapotecan cities in the region.
