San Francisco - More than two million applications have been downloaded from Apple's App Store for the iPhone and iTouch, Apple said Monday. The achievement comes just 15 months after the launch of the App Store, which allows users of the company's hit mobile phone and closely-related digital media player to download specialized applications for their devices. Apple said there were now over 85,000 such programs on offer to the more than 50 million iPhone and iTouch owners worldwide.
"The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement.
"The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it," Jobs said.
Apple achieved its first billion apps downloaded in about nine months, from July 2008 until April 23. The most recent billion was achieved in about five months.
