Phnom Penh - Cambodia on Monday reported its first death from swine flu. Dr Sok Touch, the director of the Communicable Diseases Control Department at the Ministry of Health, said the patient was a 41-year-old female patient with underlying health problems.
He said the patient had died Sunday at Calmette Hospital in the capital Phnom Penh.
"She had tested positive for swine flu," he told the German Press Agency dpa.
Dr Sok said there have been 81 confirmed cases of swine flu in the kingdom, but said the true number of cases was likely higher.
"[That is because] we don't know who has [swine flu] and who has normal flu," he said.
Prime Minister Hun Sen had announced the woman's death in a speech earlier in the day.
Cambodia recorded its first case of swine flu, known as A(H1N1) in late June. The World Health Organisation said that as of 20 September more than 300,000 cases of swine flu have been confirmed worldwide with 3,917 deaths.
