Madrid - Troubled Spanish giants Atletico Madrid announced on Friday that the contract of Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan has been extended for two years, until 2013. Forlan, 30, was Liga top scorer last season when Atletico finished fourth, something that he had achieved in 2005 when playing for Villarreal.
Atletico have made a terrible start to the new season and are second from bottom with just two points from four games.
On Friday unpopular club president Enrique Cerezo tried to relieve the pressure on coach Abel Resino by saying that "Abel will be the coach all season."
He added that "I see him (Resino) quite well. Why should I give him an ultimatum? Perhaps he has killed someone? He has lost two games and drawn two, that's all. Tomorrow in Valencia will be different."
Cerezo then said that "Atletico has the squad to be in the top two or three...Forlan continues to be the best forward in the world and (Sergio) Aguero is among the best two or three players in the world."
He finished by claiming that "we have been unlucky so far. We will go to Porto (in the Champions League, on Tuesday) to win. This team can achieve anything it wants to. It is the same team as last year."
