Los Angeles - Bode Miller has returned to the United States alpine skiing team with the intention of competing for gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The two-time overall World Cup winner, who also has four world championship gold medals to his name, left the US national set-up two years ago but told a press conference in Los Angeles Thursday local time that he intended on making a fresh start.
"I think my actions are going to speak much more loudly than any apology can," the 31-year-old said.
Miller failed to live up to expectations at the 2006 games in Turin but is confident he can make amends in Canada in February and win his first Olympic gold medal.
"The opportunity to perform at your highest level you need the support of a situation that will allow you that level of inspiration and the Olympics stand alone in that regard," he said.
"World Cup is great and I have been able to get some performances out of myself that I have been surprised by but there is no comparison to the energy and atmosphere surrounding the Olympics.
"I am looking forward to hopefully being able to perform at my very highest level in that atmosphere that is a unique opportunity."
Miller is unlikely to compete at the opening World Cup race of the season on October 25 in Soelden, Austria but will likely race in Beaver Creek, Colorado December 2-6.
Miller won two silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake games and last season ended his racing year prematurely in February after an unsuccessful appearance at the world championships in Val d'Isere.
