Johannesburg - South Africa's athletics chief will not lose his job after admitting he had lied about gender tests performed on world champion runner Caster Semenya, a federation spokesman said Thursday. Athletics South Africa (ASA) spokesman Chris Britz told Sapa news agency that Leonard Chuene remained president of the federation following a meeting of the ASA council in Johannesburg on Thursday.

ASA will release a statement later in the day, he said.

The council met to discuss the controversy surrounding ASA's handling of the Semenya affair.

According to Sapa, much of the meeting had been expected to involve Chuene's admission that he had lied about gender tests conducted on world 800-metres champion Semenya in Pretoria last month.

Chuene also admitted last weekend that he had chosen to ignore advice from ASA team doctor Harold Adams to withdraw Semenya from the World Athletics Championships in Berlin based on the results of those tests.

Chuene had initially denied all knowledge of the tests before admitting on Saturday he had lied about the gender tests, saying he had done so to protect Semanya.
