Islamabad - At least nine people drowned Tuesday at a beach in southern Pakistan during Eid al-Fitr holiday festivities, media reports said. Hundreds of people were walking along the shore when a high wave pulled 15 people into the surf at Gaddani, 30 kilometres north-west of the port city of Karachi.
The coastguard and emergency workers rescued six people while the bodies of nine were recovered later on, Urdu-language Geo television reported.
The victims were from various parts of Karachi. Thousands of people from metropolitan city visit outlying beaches during various festivals including Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan.
