Frankfurt - The protection given by fluoride-enriched toothpaste works better if it isn't rinsed away after brushing, reports a German oral health organization. Keeping the foamy fluoride-rich toothpaste in one's mouth after brushing dramatically boosts the protection from brushing, reports the German Informational Circle on Oral Hygiene and Nutritional Behaviour (IME). Therefore, spit after brushing, but don't rinse.

The best dental protection comes from thoroughly brushing three times a day - after every main meal, or at least after breakfast and before bedtime.

Alternate methods of preventing cavities - changing one's diet for example - aren't nearly as effective as using fluoride, reports the IME, citing a Belgian study. Fluoride strengthens the tooth's enamel and leaves them less susceptible to cavities. Fluoride-enhanced gels and tablets are also available.
