Colombo - The British government has relaxed a travel advisory to its citizens visiting Sri Lanka, nearly four months government forces defeated Tamil rebels, ending nearly three decades of civil war, the British High Commission in Colombo said Tuesday. "We have relaxed our advice such that we are now informing travellers that there is now a general - as opposed to high - threat from terrorism which means that there is some level of known terrorist activity in-country," Acting High Commissioner Mark Gooding said.
"This latest change is a sensible precautionary measure that reflects the latest available information and is intended to help UK nationals make informed decisions on whether to travel to Sri Lanka," he said.
Earlier the Sri Lankan government expressed displeasure that some western countries were yet to relax travel warnings, despite the government's defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in May, killing the rebels' entire leadership.
