Ferry services grounded as typhoon closes in on Hong Kong

Hong Kong - Ferry services were halted and schools ordered to close as a typhoon packing winds of around 120 kilometres an hour closed in on Hong Kong Monday. Hong Kong's government weather bureau issued the number eight tropical storm signal shortly before 6 pm as severe tropical storm Koppu was upgraded to a typhoon and moved to within 200 kilometres of the territory. The typhoon is expected to bring heavy rains and high winds as it comes closest to Hong Kong late Monday or in the early hours of Tuesday morning before making landfall in China. Ferry services to Hong Kong's outlying islands were suspended early Monday evening and earlier, all schools were ordered to close as weather deteriorated across the city of 7 million. There were no early reports of injuries in Hong Kong from the storm. Koppu killed three people and injured three others when it hit the Philippines as a tropical depression on September 12.
