Dhaka - Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman Wednesday invited Germany to invest more in his country, to take advantage of a good business environment with the 2008 restoration of democratic rule. "German entrepreneurs can invest more in Bangladesh considering an investment-friendly atmosphere prevailing now in the country," he said in receiving new German Ambassador to Dhaka Holger Michael.
Beside the bulk import of Bangladeshi garment products, Germany might import ceramics, pharmaceuticals, jute goods, home textiles, computer software and recently developed medium-and small-size ships from Bangladesh at competitive prices, the president said.
Germany is the second-largest destination for Bangladesh exports, mainly garments, with a steady growth. "Bangladesh exports to Germany were worth some 2.17 billion US dollars in 2007-08," Rahman added.
German envoy Michael said his country was interested in promoting ecologically and socially responsible business activities.
"We see still scope for increased trade and investment in both directions and are therefore committed to further expand our vibrant trade links."
Michael said Germany would support the strengthening of democracy and human rights in Bangladesh.
President Rahman recalled Germany's support for the provisional government of Bangladesh during its war of independence from Pakistan in 1971. Germany was the first European country recognize Bangladesh, he said.
