Manila - Two children were killed in a landslide in the Philippines as a tropical depression dumped heavy rains in northern and central provinces, police said Wednesday. The victims, both girls aged 3 and 5, were sleeping inside their shanty when the landslide occurred late Tuesday in Calamba City, 45 kilometres south of Manila, a police report said.
The police report said one child died on the spot, while the other was declared dead on arrival in a nearby hospital.
The girls' shack was located on a riverside at the foot of a mountainous area in the village of Real, the report said.
A wide area of the Philippines has been experiencing heavy rains since last week due to the south-west monsoon.
The weather bureau said the tropical depression north-west of the Philippines was enhancing the south-west monsoon and triggering more rains.
More than 100,000 people have been affected by floods and landslides caused by the bad weather, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said.
