Sofia -The Bulgarian government called the boating disaster in Macedonia Saturday in which at least 22 people died "a terrible tragedy" for the country, and declared a national day of mourning. Most of the victims are believed to be elderly Bulgarian tourists.

The tourists on the ill-fated Ilinden boat on Ohrid lake in Macedonia were mainly elderly people from small towns in Pirdop Zlatitsa area, east of capital Sofia, Bulgaria minister Bozidar Dimitrov said.

The boat was en route to the medieval monastery St Naum when it capsized.

The Bulgarian government has sent an airplane to Ohrid in order to bring back the survivors and declared Sunday as a national day of mourning.
