New York - US President Barack Obama is to chair a United Nations Security Council meeting on nuclear disarmament on September 24, US Ambassador Susan Rice announced Wednesday. It is the first time that a US leader will lead a debate in the political body, and Rice's announcement came a day after the US took over the rotating presidency of the council. The 15-nation council has never held a session on nuclear disarmament since its formation in 1945. Obama will also lead a discussion on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Rice said nuclear disarmament was a "pressing issue" for the Obama administration. Obama had called for a world free of nuclear weapons after he took over The White House. Rice on Wednesday also made public the council's monthly programme of work. The UN General Assembly session opens in mid-September, and government leaders from 192 countries that are UN members will attend the meetings of the assembly as well as the council.

The UN is ineffective on big issues where it is more about words than results: like Burma, like Nuclear Weapons. We need world leaders committed to a free, peaceful and green world. The world is in dire need of real leadership and learning because we keep repeating our mistakes. Maybe Barack Obama can help provide that leadership but debate is one thing: will he stop the sale of Trident2 to the UK?
These nuclear weapons are immoral and illegal. The UK originally developed them in complete secret and now are replacing Trident without giving the British people any say.
Look out for US and UK hypocrisy in this debate: For non-proliferation and Against unilateral disarmament. It really is time that the UN imposed sanctions on the 8 nations with nuclear weapons.

I read with great interest this announcement about President Obama's participation in the disarmament session.
However, have you heard about the large non-governmental organizations’ disarmament conference in Mexico City next month?
Apparently, the UN Department of Public Information is organizing such an event, with some 1,200 NGO representatives from around the world participating.
According to its website, http://www.un.org/dpi/ngosection/conference/, the UN Secretary-General, the UN Special Representative for Disarmament Affairs, a Nobel laureate, the mayor of Hiroshima, and a host of disarmament thought leaders are going to be addressing the conference.
Sounds like disarmament is catching on!
