Manila - The Philippines is one of seven countries in Asia facing a serious child trafficking problem, according to a study released Wednesday by the United Nations Children Fund. The report, Child Trafficking in East and South-East Asia: Reversing the Trend, noted that internal trafficking in the Philippines is more problematic than cross-border trafficking.

"In the Philippines, children are mainly trafficked from the rural areas to urban cities," it said.

The study revealed that other countries facing serious child trafficking problems are China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

It said child trafficking routes in Asia indicated that origins and destinations come from less-developed to more-developed countries.

"These routes are from North Korea to north-eastern China, from eastern Russia to South Korea; from Thailand and Philippines to Japan and South Korea; from South Korea to Japan and the US; and from Colombia and Taiwan to Japan," it said.

Factors contributing to child trafficking are poverty, family breakdown, the low status and role of children in the societies as well as lack of educational and viable employment opportunities.

"Poor legal and regulatory frameworks, weak law enforcement, under-resourced social welfare services, limited capacity of service providers and lack of recognition of or respect for children's fundamental rights have adversely affected the lives of millions of children in the region," it said.

philippine child trafficking.
By: dcn , Thu, 03 Sep 2009 13:18:22 GMT

child trafficking in the philippines is discreetly pushed by the philippine government. the philippine government encourage all the citizen to work abroad, married or single in order to get back remittances to sustain the philippine economy. parents leave their young children behind trusting them to one of their families which these innocent children could not understand because for them the best thing on earth is to be with their parents everyday. i am pure filipina by blood(not as a citizen)and i am so ashame every time i heard or read and an article that one of the highest politician proudly announced the so-called OFW remittances that reaches billions of pesos with out thinking that it is disgusting to hear such a message. we know behind this remittances, it cost the lives of the children. my own family is a victim to this ignorance and greediness of this government. now, i have 3 very young niece and nephews left behind because both their parents work in italy. one of the problem, their parents work as an ordinary so they can hardly afford to live a comfortable life in italy as the must pay their small apartment and their daily needs. at the same time they have to send money to the philippines. it is brutal to grow up with out seeing your parents and it is a torture for the parents who are not able to see their children while growing up in this world. the philippine government must create jobs for the people in order to keep a sustainable income not only for the country but for the people as well. through good system and honest governance , there will no children in the future who will suffer to any kind of abuse especially child trafficking and child labor inside the philippines.
