Budapest - The Slovak Embassy in Budapest on Monday night was attacked with Molotov cocktails, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported, citing the police. The incendiary devices did not explode and did not cause any damage, MTI said. Police have no information on the suspects.
The foreign ministries of Slovakia and Hungary condemned the attack and expressed regret that it would complicate a solution to the current tensions between the two countries.
Tensions between Slovakia and Hungary have been high recently. Last week, Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom planned a private visit to Slovakia to attend the unveiling of a statue of Hungarian King Stephen I. That visit was canceled after Slovak authorities decided to block Solyom's entry.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry said the attack on Tuesday would complicate the resolution of contentious issues in bilateral relations.
There's "no justification at all" for such an attack, the ministry said, adding that it damages the interests and reputation of Hungary.
Slovakia's Foreign Ministry viewed the incident "with great concern" but considered it "an isolated" criminal act," spokesman Peter Stano told dpa. Right now, Slovak-Hungarian relations require increased sensitivity in dealing with each other," he said.
