Washington - US President Barack Obama on Thursday reiterated his commitment to immigration reform, but immigrant rights activists demanded concrete moves and dates. Obama dropped in on a meeting of about 130 representatives of immigrant organizations, trade unions, police associations and religious groups with US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano in a White House annex.

The focus of the meeting was the immigration reform that was part of Obama's campaign pledges but which critics say is lagging behind in his presidential agenda.

Frank Sharry, executive secretary of the organization America's Voice, said that the real test will be in concrete actions to be implemented in the coming months. He said there is "great frustration" within the US Latino community over the lack of "concrete results."

Obama's presence at the meeting is positive, "but it will not be if we hear rhetoric without seeing concrete action," Sharry told reporters.

Gabe Gonzalez, campaign director for the Centre for Community Change, agreed that "actions are more important than words."

"We need actions, not just words," he said.

At the meeting, Obama said he hoped to press on with migration reform before the end of the year.

Obama "understands that the immigration system is not working and needs to be fixed," said Luis Miranda, White House spokesman for Hispanic media.

"That is why Secretary Napolitano was asked to work with stakeholders and with members of Congress to really move forward in the legislative process with respect to this important issue," Miranda added.

Immigration Reform
By: AmericanPatriot , Sat, 22 Aug 2009 14:10:15 GMT

Comprehensive Immigration Reform, we've heard this tired line far too many times. We heard this in 1986 (several times since then) and we were lied to then and we're being lied to now. Immigration is not "broken", it's the refusal of our elected officials to enforce U.S. immigration law and to secure our borders and ports.

How many times has the U.S. given amnesty to illegal aliens? Seven times since 1986. Each time amnesty is given, the rate of continued illegal immigration rises. Americans remain unprotected from this unwanted invasion of unidentified people from across the world. No region of the country has been spared. Our government’s willingness to spare no effort to coddle Hispanics, which includes refusing to enforce its own immigration laws, has done much to shatter the unity and quality of life in many communities across our country.

While U.S. citizens wobble, stagger and clutch for their fading language, culture and viable society—our government force-feeds 138,000 immigrants into this nation every 30 days. Another 100,000 illegal criminal migrants stampede our borders every month. While legal & illegals arrive from an endless line, 32.2 million Americans subsist on food stamps. Another 15 million Americans suffer unemployment, and over 13 million American children live under the poverty line.

Immigration cannot and must not continue at its present clip of over 2.4 million annually. We cannot keep up with it. We cannot afford it. We cannot withstand it. We cannot cope with it. We will not survive it. Let’s face it! All forms of immigration in 2009 and beyond destroy the foundation of the United States of America. Immigration overwhelms our environment, infrastructure, culture and language.

Controlling immigration is not only the moral thing to do; it is mandated by our Constitution. Our government must constitutionally ensure the financial security of its citizens and protect our borders from invasion. Every poll that is taken makes it clear that a majority of Americans want our borders secured and lawful immigration levels greatly reduced (100,000 per year of only educated and skilled). Another amnesty is off the table because We The People refuse--absolutely refuse, to be sold on another path to citizenship.

If the Democrats try to give amnesty to millions of illegal foriegn nationals, they are through. The mask is already off, most Americans see them for what they are. We as Americans must show illegal alien pandering politicians what it is to be unemployed, at their next re-election.

Obama wants illegals

Mr. Sharry, you say there is a great frustration in the Latino community with the lack of concrete results. You want to hear frustration? Just wait until Obama tries to give citizenship to the criminals who've just walked into our country and gone on to commit more crimes. If he thinks we've raised our voices on health care, just wait. We will NOT turn our country over to illegal aliens. We have laws although illegals dishonor them and our government ignores them.

The Loyalty of Obama and the Dems for illegal aliens
By: Bobby , Fri, 21 Aug 2009 19:41:43 GMT

What a guy. And those Democrats all around him. "We demand this, and this, and this other thing--for illegal alien foreign nationals. Oh well, when will Americans thick skulls wake up and realize that for the Democratic leftists, Americans are nothing more than a source of tax money, to carry out their leftist plans. Oh well, stupid is as stupid does.

'Activists' demand pres. move on Amnesty
By: Donald Cho , Fri, 21 Aug 2009 19:18:11 GMT

If Barack Obama presses forward with his AMNESTY (Comprehesive Immigation Reform) quest he will set off a firestorm in this country bordering on civil war. The current uproar and resistance to his Health Reform propsals is just a portend of things to come. For Obama he risks impeachment and a one term lame duck presidency if he submits to the La Raza re-conquista Amnesty/open border demands for Amnesty for illegal aliens.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform
By: Lance Sjogren , Fri, 21 Aug 2009 18:38:27 GMT

"Stakeholders", more like "special interest groups".

Has the establishment every considered allowing workers and taxpayers to have a voice on immigration policy? After all, they are the ones who will be thrown under the bus if there were a "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" bill signed into law.

But, no worry, Obama is a very intelligent person and know that if the Democratic Party pushes through a CIR bill then it is committing political suicide.

Just Dropping In
By: NotAnObot , Fri, 21 Aug 2009 03:27:10 GMT

Does the occupant ever consider dropping in on the majority of CITIZENS that want our borders protected, illegal foreign invaders deported and Article IV Section 4 of the Constitution ENFORCED?
