Berlin - Janeth Jepkosgei remains in contention to defend her 800 metres world title after the Kenyan federation successfully appealed an incident in which she fell on Monday. A spokeswoman for the ruling body IAAF said that Jepkosgei was given a place in Monday's semi-finals.
She fell after tangling with South African season leader Caster Semenya of South Africa and finished the race in seventh place. The IAAF said that Jepkosgei was at a disadvantage in the event, but it did not disqualify Semenya.
Contact from jostling for position, especially after the start which is run in separate lanes, happens often in middle distance races.
Earlier Monday, double Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion Angelo Taylor lost an appeal against his elimination in the world championship heats, United States team officials said.
Taylor was beaten for third place, which would have assured a place in the next round, by one hundredth of a second by Australian Brendon Cole on Sunday.
Cole was later disqualified by officials from the ruling body IAAF for illegally trailing a leg around a hurdle, but then reinstated after an Australian appeal.
This prompted a US protest which was turned down by the IAAF on Monday.
