Hanoi - A 29-year-old woman in southern Vietnam has died from the H1N1 virus, the first swine flu fatality in the country, health authorities reported Tuesday. Truong Tan Minh, director of the health department of Khanh Hoa province, said the patient died Monday evening of respiratory complications.
She was initially admitted to a military hospital in the coastal city of Nha Trang on July 30. She was moved to Khanh Hoa General Hospital after testing positive for the H1N1 virus.
The online newspaper VnExpress reported Tuesday that the woman's 9-year-old son had tested positive for H1N1 as well, and was being treated in Khanh Hoa General Hospital. He was reportedly in a stable condition.
Vietnam's Ministry of Health confirmed 35 new cases of swine flu Monday, raising the total number of cases in the country to 971 since its initial arrival in May.
Some 470 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital. The rest are being treated under quarantine.
