Washington - Before taking a trip with your notebook computer, spend some time reviewing the power saving features that you have activated. On Windows machines, you can review the power saving features under Power Options (XP) or under Mobile PC (Vista) in the Control Panel. Set the power features to aggressively turn off components not in use, and you can lengthen your battery life considerably. --------

Washington - Want to know whether your Vista-based PC is running as efficiently as possible? Take a look at the Reliability and Performance Monitor, accessible through the Control Panel under System and Maintenance, Performance Information and Tools, Advanced Tools. From there, click "Generate a system health report." Windows will check all of your computer's major components. If it finds a problem, it will suggest how to resolve it.

Washington - Today's notebook computers run hot, thanks to a host of powerful components stuffed into very small spaces. To avoid overheating the notebook, try not to block its vents when you are using it. Keep in mind that most notebooks contain vents on the side or the bottom of the unit. Be sure not to block these vents; otherwise, your notebook may overheat and shut down.

--------

Washington - Hopefully you have a plan in place to back up your computer on a regular basis. Do you also check those backups to ensure that they are readable? Believe it or not, backup files can be corrupted just like other files. So when establishing a backup routine, be sure to have your backup application verify the backup files once the backup operation is complete. Typically doing this involves merely selecting a check box. Verification takes a bit longer, but the peace of mind you gain will be worth the wait.

--------

Washington - The battle against repetitive stress injuries involves everything you touch and see while using the computer. Keep your mouse and other pointing devices within easy reach. Avoid spending long periods of time with your arm outstretched in order to reach a computer mouse. Your keyboard should be directly in front of you at a height that allows you to bend your elbows at 90 degree angles.
