Bielefeld, Germany - An elderly man who stormed a gathering of Jehovah's Witnesses Thursday, armed with a machine gun, had planned a rampage, police in the northern German city of Bielefeld said on Friday. The 82-year-old, who burst into the community centre Thursday evening, had written private notes announcing his intention to fire a gun into the gathering, the police said.

A technical fault prevented the weapon from firing.

More than 80 people were present at the meeting of Jehovah's Witnesses, when the masked man entered at 8:45 pm (1845 GMT).

A guard had seen him arrive and alerted the congregation so members could leave through an emergency exit. Nobody was injured.

The octogenarian is thought to have entered the cleared room and left immediately. Shortly thereafter he appeared at the emergency exit, without his mask.

Ignoring the group of people gathered by the exit, the man headed for his car. As he turned his back to the gathering, two of the congregation members grabbed him and held him until police arrived.

Officers also found a samurai sword, three clips of bullets and a knife in the man's car, parked nearby.

The man, who was taken into police custody, allegedly blamed the Jehovah'ss Witnesses for making him lose contact to his daughter.

accusations
By: mr m , Thu, 27 Aug 2009 12:27:39 GMT

Jesus was put on trial because of false accusations against him,but his public record spoke for itself, likewise JW public record speaks for itself regardless of the accusations.

Bible prophecy proves true
By: Observer , Thu, 06 Aug 2009 15:52:26 GMT

If this story is not sad enough, some of the comments that seem to reason/justify this man's horrendous attempt. Any person for what ever reason that would attempt to harm innocent people is deserving of judgement in this world and from God. Religious differences are NOT unique to only JW's and their families. This is a worldwide issue common to the HUMAN family, no matter what religion. Any descent person would not resort to violence to settle matters. True Christians would not kill anyone for ANY reason.

(Matthew 22:36-40) 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 He said to him: “‘You must LOVE Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ 38 This is the GREATEST and FIRST commandment. 39 The SECOND, like it, is this, ‘You must LOVE your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the WHOLE Law hangs, and the Prophets.”

The accusation that JW's break up families is totally false. The family is the center of God's creation. Family members can choose their OWN religion. As God will judge every man according to their OWN deeds and life.

(1 John 3:13-15) 13 Do not marvel, brothers, that the world hates YOU. 14 We know we have passed over from death to life, because we love the BROTHERS. He who does not love remains in death. 15 Everyone who HATES his brother is a MANSLAYER, and YOU know that NO manslayer has everlasting life remaining in him. . .

(Matthew 12:50)...... 50 For whoever does the WILL of my Father who is in heaven, the same is my BROTHER, and sister, and mother.”

(Titus 1:16) 16 They publicly declare they know God, but they disown him by their works, because they are detestable and disobedient and not approved for good work of any sort.

Many JW's have family members that do not share their faith and have good relationships with them. Persons that post misinformation and distorted truth need to go work on their OWN faith and beliefs. Did you ever notice they criticize but do not tell about their religious beliefs. What is your truth? Let God be found true and every man a liar. I encourage people to speak directly to JW's to know what they believe.

82 year old man
By: Debra Zarate , Mon, 03 Aug 2009 00:49:30 GMT

I am so sorry about the situation of the 82 year old man not having a relationship with his daughter, Jehovah's people are allowed to have a relationship with their children who are not Jehovah's witnesses; however If the child is one of Jehovahs Witnesses and the parent is disfellowshiped; then their may be some restrictions as far as the relationship. and vise versa; If the child is disfellowedship and the parent is not; their may be some restrictions. Jehovah gave the command as one of the commandments Honor your Father and your mother; Jehovah did not give any boundries to that command; He never said do not honor your parents if they belong to an other religion. He did say however we must obey God as ruler rather then men. We are to obey and honor our parents as long as it is not breaking Gods law. Jehovah is a very loving God and a very loving father. I am sure the news media does not have all the facts.

Hold on a sec!
By: nick , Sun, 02 Aug 2009 13:17:33 GMT

What on earth are some of these comments insinuating? That it was understandable for this man to try and fire a machine gun into a congregation of men, women and children going about their worship, because of a fall out with his daughter? Agree or disagree with the beliefs of these people they are still human beings and have a right to worship God in the way they choose.

I've worked with a number of witnesses and find them kind, honest and reliable. So they kick people out who dont live up to the rules? So does my golf club!

82 year old man
By: Memories from the Cult , Sun, 02 Aug 2009 12:09:17 GMT

Very Sad Said - However being one of Jehovah's Witnesses I can tell you that I do associate with my family who are non members.

Non-Members is YOUR key word here. My family also associated with our NON-MEMBER relatives - occasionally - it was DEFINITELY not encouraged.

Also I have helped a lot of my co-workers to move or with encouragement of with their yard etc.

This is like saying "of course I help my neighbors" - When is the last time you walked two doors down from your own home and 'helped' your neighbor?

So the comment posted here could not be further from the truth.
What if... he didn't 'mistreated his daughter'. What if he didn't 'gave her a hard time for being a Witness'. What if he followed 'the book of Corinthians, the words of Paul and the verse of Matthew.

You, as a JW, already judged this man. What is the VERY FIRST THOUGHT that goes through your mind when Bro. or Sis. So&SO says "Bro. Perfect was disfellowshipped." The first thing may be - 'what did he do?' The second thing 'I have to turn my back on him'. The third 'I can't believe he did that...' no proof is needed, just the word of your wolves in sheeps clothing.

Destroy families. Yes - Jehovah Witnesses destroy families.

Ask the next one that comes to your door "If I become a JW, can I go to my grandchild's birthday party?" "If I become a JW, can I attend my sisters wedding in a church?" It is up to your conscience they will TELL you; Ask them if they would go..... see what they have to say.

Yes - i can see a family member that is disfellowshipped go off the deep end. Unless you were born and raised or became a JW at a young age or if you were taught in a cult similar to them you will never understand the mental harm they do to family members.

His Pain... "The Village" is a comparison to the mind set of JW's. Accept what WE say because WE say it. Our GOD is the ONLY true GOD. Ask any JW - who will be alive on the earth after Armageddon? The answer: Only them.
I understand His Pain... simply having a question regarding 1914 can lead to your disfellowshipment.

Diffusing Tantrums.
By: Margarett , Sun, 02 Aug 2009 06:49:18 GMT

We're serious about our beliefs and our unity. We don't disfellowship unless this is being harrassed.

Our stand on blood has inspired the perfecting of many sanitary bloodless proceedures and several bloodless hospitals, saving untold lives, which is minimised like the lives lost from our stand are maximised. Think about it, no little critters in the transfusion, and the many with hemogloben sensitivity.

And are you sure you want all Jehovah's Witnesses to go to war? No you don't. We're global. Instead we cross the seas in wartime and peacetime, removing weapons from their hands.

We have brochures on every hot subject. Please open your doors. Regards. Margaret

It was a tantrum.
By: Margaret , Sun, 02 Aug 2009 06:20:01 GMT

Jehovah's Witnesses adhere to their beliefs, and their unity. This causes tantrums.

Tantrums because we won't go to war and shoot each other or others. (Remember, we're global, and you really don't want 'all' the JWs to go to war.)
We adhere to our beliefs on blood. It's a moot point being there's bloodless hospitals and sanitary non blood treatments perfected everywhere because of our stand. saving untold lives, (No little critters in the transfusion, plus ones with hemogloben sensitivity.)However, these lives saved are minimized like the "no blood casualties" are maximized. We have brochures on every hot topic. Please allow us to speak for ourselves. (Open that door.)

Other side of the story....
By: JW Lady , Sat, 01 Aug 2009 17:10:50 GMT

Well, let's hear what the daughter herself has to say about why she is no longer in contact with her father.....

Contrary to Popular Belief
By: Truth Teller , Sat, 01 Aug 2009 15:35:21 GMT

Contrary to popular belief Jehovah's Witnesses do not excomunicate for the sake of doing it. In the book of Corinthians Paul mentioned what needs to be done with an unrepentant sinner.11 "But now I am writing YOU to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. 12 For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Do YOU not judge those inside, 13 while God judges those outside? “Remove the wicked [man] from among yourselves.”(1 Corinthians 5:11-13) Pauls counsel is clear that those that willfully practice sin cannot be allowed in the congregation. We simply follow what the bible says and will continue to do so. If other religions followed suit they would not be morally bankrupt. I know some will say that Jesus taught love but here are the words of Jesus himself Matthew 10:34-37 34 "Do not think I came to put peace upon the earth; I came to put, not peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to cause division, with a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a young wife against her mother-in-law. 36 Indeed, a man’s enemies will be persons of his own household. 37 He that has greater affection for father or mother than for me is not worthy of me; and he that has greater affection for son or daughter than for me is not worthy of me."

Very Sad
By: Truth Teller , Sat, 01 Aug 2009 14:57:35 GMT

This is very sad. I feel bad for the older man. However being one of Jehovah's Witnesses I can tell you that I do associate with my family who are non members. Also I have helped a lot of my co-workers to move or with encouragement of with their yard etc. So the comment posted here could not be further from the truth. Also to say that Jehovah's Witnesses are to blame for him losing contact with his daughter is ridiculous. We dont know if the man mistreated his daughter or gave her a hard time for being a Witness which is what she wanted to do.
We dont randomly cut off associating with family members. There is always a reason maybe he was hostile towards her. We don't know all the facts. What we do know is he was planning to commit mass murder on a group of people who are the most peaceful on this planet.

82 yr ol previously a JW?
By: Gayle , Sat, 01 Aug 2009 13:30:28 GMT

Had the 82 yr old previously been a JW? Had he been disfellowshipped? I know the JWs have a extreme policy of disfellowshipping/shunning, even to involved immediate family.

Was he previously a JW?

Had the 82-yr old been previously a Jehovah's Witness? Had he been disfellowshipped from JWs?

His pain is understandable...but actions are not
By: James , Fri, 31 Jul 2009 16:15:34 GMT

Jehovah's Witnesses love to knock on people's doors and invite them in to their church, but when it comes to everyday association with those not in their church, they pretty much look the other way, even with non-believing relatives and colleagues. It's hypocritical at the least, and socially and personally devastating at most. I should know - I lost all of my friends and family in the church the very day I decided to leave, with all due respect to everyone. I did not leave out of hard feelings toward anyone in my former church, but rather I just got tired of living in such a small world. Ever seen the movie 'The Village'? That's what it felt like every single day.

Anyhow this guy's actions were reprehensible, but his heart I am sure was broken by his supercilious JW daughter. The insular socialization and the nefarious concept of shunning those who leave the church is not only counter to basic Christianity (if one believes in Christianity), but is counter to basic human goodness. And they say we're made in God's image? I for one would never want to trust and worship a God, or a person, who is like that.

Thankfully no one was hurt, JW or not. That was quite fortuitous.
