Manila - The family of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos joined the country in praying for ailing Philippine democracy icon and former president Corazon Aquino, a Marcos family statement said Thursday. Cory, as the people fondly call her, led the bloodless 1986 people power revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship and sent the Marcoses in exile for several years.
The 76-year-old Aquino has been battling colon cancer since last year and has been hospitalized since late June.
"Let's drop politics on this one and just wish the former president peace in her heart and comfort in her pains," a statement issued by Congressman Ferdinand Marcos Junior said.
"We believe in the power of prayers and that God serves as our best weapon against problems, trials and difficulties in life," he added. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs Aquino and her family in this difficult moment."
Yellow ribbons have been tied on street lamps, trees, fences and buildings in Manila and key cities throughout the country to honour Cory.
Yellow was Aquino's symbol in her fight against Marcos, and ribbons in that colour were also tied to cars, trucks, tricycles, bicycles and push carts.
Masses have been held every day in some churches around the country to pray for the recovery of Aquino whose health is deteriorating.
Aquino's son, Senator Benigno Aquino III, said his mother's condition has improved after her blood pressure fluctuated on Monday but he did not know how long she would remain stable.
