Turnberry, Scotland - Ernie Els carded a final round 68 to sit amongst a group of three players to finish on 1-over par Sunday at the 138th British Open in Turnberry. The South African missed an opportunity to set a tougher target on the Scottish links course when bogeying the last and instead had to be satisfied with finishing level with Denmark's Soren Hansen, who shot a 67.
Justin Leonard also shares the early clubhouse lead after a round of 68 that included six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 16th hole.
Italian teenager Matteo Manassero secured the silver medal awarded to the leading amateur after the 16-year-old ended with a round of 69 for a total of 2-over.
American Tom Watson, who at the age of 59 is bidding to become the oldest-ever winner of a golf major, started his final round poorly with bogeys on two of the opening three holes to drop to 2-under, but repaired some of the damage with a birdy on the par-5 seventh.
Ross Fisher, who was on stand-by to leave the tournament as his wife Jo is expecting their first baby, looks to be out of the reckoning after carding an eight on the par-4 fifth hole.
