Madrid - Rafael van der Vaart aims for a return to SV Hamburg after no longer being wanted by his current club Real Madrid, Spanish sports daily Marca said on Thursday. The Dutch playmaker van der Vaart left Hamburg for Real 12 months ago. He failed to become a regular starter there and is to be offloaded after Real hired stars including Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka in a massive spending spree.
Van der Vaart, 26, was a popular star in Hamburg during his three seasons there 2005-2008.
However, it remains unclear whether Hamburg have the money to get him back to Germany and to pay his salary. Real reportedly want 15 million euros (21 million dollars) and van der Vaart's salary in Spain is said to be 4.5 million euros per season.
Germany's Bild daily speculated on Thursday that Hamburg may attempt a loan hiring.
