Madrid - The premature son of Spain's first H1N1 influenza victim has died because of a medical error, hospital sources said Monday. The family of Dalilah Mimouni, who died of the virus known as swine flu on June 30, had already said it would sue two Madrid hospitals for initially failing to diagnose her disease.
Twenty-year-old Mimouni died following an emergency caesarian section seven months into her pregnancy.
Her baby Rayan was not infected with H1N1.
The baby was "doing well" when hospital staff made a "terrible mistake", feeding him through the vein instead of the nose, said Antonio Barba Ruiz de Gauna, director of Madrid's Gregorio Maranon hospital.
Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez described Rayan's death as "terrible news."
Rayan was the first child of Moroccan-born Mimouni and her young husband.
Two people have died of swine flu in Spain, while the country has more than 1,000 confirmed cases. Fifteen of the patients are in serious condition.
