Details emerge of UN proposal for Macedonia-Greece name row: report

Skopje - UN special envoy Matthew Nimitz has proposed a solution for 18 year-old name row between Greece and neighbouring Macedonia, Skopje daily Dnevnik reported Saturday. The pair have been at loggerheads since the collapse of the former Yugoslavia over the rights to the name Macedonia, shared by a northern province of Greece, and its neighbour to the north. Nimitz proposed the name "Republic of northern Macedonia" and "Macedonian language" for the country currently known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Maceonia (FYROM), as a solution to the row which stonewalled Skopje's bid to joining European Union and NATO, Dnevnik wrote. Because of the name dispute Greece blocked Macedonia's bid to enter NATO earlier this year along with Albania and Croatia. The United Nations formally refers to the country as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia(FYROM), while Skopje prefers the name Republic of Macedonia.

why dont we just call fyrom western bulgaria.after all most of them have surnames like Markovski and if you take the ski off its Markov which is bulgarian.

Liam, the issue hear is more than the name Macedonia. The newly independant state of FYROM has no real identity or history. In actual fact, they themselves are confused as to whether they are Albanian, Bulgarian or Slavic. By claiming tittle to Macedonia they inherit a rich Greek History, motivation for territorial claims for the lucrative port of Thessaloniki and propanga to brainwash the culture diverse FYROM citizens they are Macedonias and not Albanians or Bulgarians.

When FYROM was still a state of Yugoslavia titled as 'Macedonia' Greece took no action merely because it was internal.
There are many places across the world including suburbs titled as Macedonia.
Just as Greece, one its Northern states is titled as Macedonia.
The Greeks shouldn't have to change anything. For the province was called Macedonia before 1991, 1948 even before 1913 under Ottomon rule.
We shouldn't be affected for political actions created by nationalist rulers of the past i.e. Tito.

Can't have a North Without a South. Has Greece accepted the name "Republic of Southern Macedonia?" It will be to confusing for people to understand when they look on a map and don't see a Southern Macedonia but only a Northern Macedonia. I'm just using Greek Logic as they say it confuses people when they look on a map and see the country Macedonia and the province of Greece "Macedonia."
