L'Aquila, Italy - US screen star George Clooney, during a visit Thursday to L'Aquila, said he plans to make a movie in the central Italian city which was devastated in an April earthquake and is the site of this week's Group of Eight summit. Accompanied by fellow actor Bill Murray, Clooney said shooting for the film, in which he intends to play a role, would begin in September, the ANSA news agency reported.
Clooney said scouting for film locations in and around L'Aquila, began before the earthquake that killed nearly 300 people and left some 60,00 homeless.
He said he hoped the film would help reconstruction efforts for the city where thousands of dispossessed people currently live in tent shelters.
G8 leaders- including US President Barack Obama whose election campaign Clooney supported - should "do more to help" development in Africa, he said.
The Hollywood heartthrob famous for his role in the hit television series ER and blockbuster films such as Ocean's Eleven, is also known as a human rights campaigner and liberal politics activist.
