New Delhi - The death toll from tainted alcohol in India's Gujarat state rose to at least 76 on Thursday, the NDTV news channel reported. Twenty-five people died of poisoning on Thursday while more than 100 were undergoing treatment in hospital in Ahmedabad.
Demonstrators threw stones at police in Ahmedabad and demanded tougher action against the producers of illegal alcohol.
The news agency PTI reported that the police have arrested 24 producers of illicit alcohol including one ring leader.
NDTV reported that alcohol was still being sold in Gujarat although it is illegal there.
The consumption of tainted alcohol causes numerous deaths in India every year.
