Baghdad - At least 30 people were killed and 63 injured in two consecutive suicide bombings on Thursday in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, police sources said. The bombers detonated their explosives in a crowded street in Tel Afar district, where many Shiite Turkmen congregate, sources told the German Press Agency dpa.

Mosul, which lies some 400 km north of Baghdad, has witnessed several explosions since the US withdrawal from Iraqi cities and towns on June 30.

On Tuesday, nine people were killed and 20 injured when two cars exploded in two Shiite districts in Mosul, while seven Iraqis were injured, including two policemen, when a gunman threw a bomb at a police patrol in the centre of the city.

Mosul is the capital city of Nineveh province, which is among the most ethnically and religiously diverse areas of Iraq, has been the site of near-daily deadly attacks in recent months, despite successive security pushes that police say have netted hundreds of suspected militants.
