Washington - Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya agreed Tuesday to cooperate with the mediation efforts of Costa Rican President Oscar Arias to resolve the crisis in his country. Speaking in Washington after meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Zelaya said he would fly to Costa Rican capital San Jose on Wednesday.
Clinton said earlier Tuesday that Aris had agreed to lead the mediating effort, but added that she told Zelaya that "the United States supports the restoration of the democratic constitutional order in Honduras."
Arias will host the talks in Costa Rica, and the leader who replaced Zelaya, former speaker of the Congress Roberto Micheletti, has agreed to participate, Clinton said.
Zelaya also accepted the possibility of holding elections in Honduras before the scheduled November 29 vote.
"Of course, even if they want to hold them as early as tomorrow. But a de facto government does not give legitimacy to an electoral process," he said.
