Tokyo - Shares in Tokyo fell significantly in Monday morning trading. Midway through trading the Nikkei 225 Stock Average was down 154.80 points or 1.58 per cent at 9661.27.

The broader-based Topix index fell 9.52 points or 1.03 per cent to stand at 911.10.

On the currency markets at 9am (0000 GMT) the dollar traded at 95.87-92 yen, down from Friday's 5pm quote of 95.92-94 yen. The euro traded at 1.3960-65 dollars, down from Friday's 5pm quote of 1.4009-10 dollars. The euro traded at 133.85-90 yen, down from Friday's close of 134.38-42 yen.
