Copenhagen/Nuuk, Greenland - In advance of a major global warming conference in December, ministers from 29 industrialized nations have agreed that no more than an increase of two degrees Celsius can be allowed in the fight against global warming. "There was enormous political will shown here for a positive result in Copenhagen," said Danish Climate and Energy Minister Connie Hedegaard at the meeting's conclusion, referring to the site of the December convention.
The meeting in the town of Ilulissat - Greenlandic for iceberg - was attended by representatives of the United States, India and Russia, along with 26 other nations.
China decided not to come, apparently to protest a recent meeting between Danish officials and the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader.
Hedegaard said the challenge now is to take the consensus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions and use it in preparing for the December conference.
