Johannesburg - The government of the Comoros islands has announced 30 days of national mourning for the victims, mostly Comorans, of Tuesday's plane crash off its coast. Comoran President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi announced the mourning period in an address Thursday on national television. The crash claimed 152 lives.
The Airbus A310, operated by Yemen's Yemenia airline, plunged into the Indian Ocean off Grande Comore island after missing its first attempt at landing in windy weather at the Comoran capital Moroni.
The flight originated in France.
The only known survivor, a 12-year-old French girl of Comoran origin, returned home to Paris with minor injuries on Thursday.
Most of the 142 passengers were Comorans living in France, the former colonial power, which is home to a large Comoran expatriate community.
