Warsaw - The price of 20 basic food items in Poland rose on average by 2.6 per cent in the last quarter despite recent regular falls in food prices, according to a survey Thursday for the daily Rzeczpospolita. Hypermarket prices saw the biggest rise in prices at 4.7 per cent. Supermarkets reported a 3.2 per cent rise.
"Because of the weakening of the zloty and the rise in transportation costs, some products got more expensive," a spokesman for the Real supermarket chain told the daily.
The basket of 20 basic goods cost 96.70 zloty (31.32 dollars). The rises come as companies tighten their belts before the upcoming quarter, which is expected to be the worst in years for the sector.
