Madrid - Spain and the United States on Wednesday signed an agreement allowing US frontier security officials to control travel documents of people flying to the US from Madrid, Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said. Rubalcaba signed the agreement with US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
Three US officials had already started checking passports at Madrid's Barajas airport several months ago, Rubalcaba said.
The measure targeted people such as Latin Americans or Iraqis who tried to enter the US illegally through Spain.
The minister did not exclude the possibility of placing US officials also at Spanish airports, or Spanish passport controllers in the US.
