Pope's 'social' encyclical to be published on July 7

Vatican City - Pope Benedict XVI's latest encyclical, a document on how the global economy should take into account the needs of the poor, is to be published on July 7, the Vatican said Wednesday. Entitled "Caritas in veritate," in English, Charity in Truth, the text - compiled with the input of several experts - was given final approval when Benedict signed it on Monday. The encyclical's publication on the eve of the July 8-10 Group of Eight summit, in L'Aquila, Italy, is widely seen as a message by the pontiff to leaders of the world's most advanced nations. The Vatican has said Benedict had been working on the encyclical since 2007, but held back on issuing it so that he could update it to reflect the global economic crisis. Traditionally, encyclicals are the most authoritative documents a pope can issue. Benedict has written two in his four years as pope: "God is Love" in 2006 and "Saved by Hope" in 2007.
