Manila - Communist rebels on Wednesday raided a police station in a southern Philippine town and seized several firearms, a regional police spokesman said. Senior Superintendent Nestor Fajura said at least 50 heavily armed guerrillas swooped down on the police station in Santa Josefa town in Agusan del Norte province, 795 kilometres south of Manila, and disarmed the police officers on duty. Fajura said there were no injuries in the attack since the police officers at the station were overwhelmed and did not offer any resistance. Initial investigations showed that the rebels seized at least five firearms, according to Fajura. Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
