Tegucigalpa - Honduran government trade unionists on Monday organized demonstrations to protest the ousting of President Manuel Zelaya a day earlier. In Tegucigalpa, hundreds of Zelaya supporters tried to reach the seat of government, but were stopped by police and the Army. While there were no immediate reports of clashes, the protestors burned tyres.
Helicopters were flying over the city, to keep the situation under control and act as a deterrent against further protests.
Congress Speaker Roberto Micheletti was designated Honduran president after Zelaya was ousted and expelled to Costa Rica Sunday.
Micheletti - whose government has no international recognition - decreed a 48-hour curfew from Sunday night.
