Kathmandu - France has sought the extradition of a French national accused of sexual abusing children, a news report said Friday. French national Jean-Jacques Haye, 60, was arrested in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu in March after a tip-off from organisations working for children's rights in Nepal.
France made a formal request for extradition earlier this week in a letter from French Prime Minister Francois Fillon to Nepalese Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, the government-owned Rashtriya Samachar Samiti news agency reported.
In the letter Fillon also said Nepal and France could make collaborative efforts for the protection of children, the news agency reported.
After his arrest, Haye said he had had been living in Nepal since August 2008 but Nepalese police say he had been in the country for more than five years illegally.
There was an Interpol warrant against Haye and Nepalese police said a special initiative was taken to arrest him at the request of Paris police.
