Tehran - Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Moussavi has met with senior clergy and discussed the latest developments in the country, including the deaths of protestors during street demonstrations in Tehran, his website said Tuesday. In the meeting which was held Monday, Moussavi discussed the alleged fraud in the June 12 presidential election, people's right to follow up the issue, mass arrests and attacks on protestors which have led to the killings of "innocent people," the website said.

No further details were given.

Security has been tightened in Tehran since Monday, with several police and security forces as well as the voluntary Basij militia deployed throughout the Iranian capital.

Also the country's revolutionary guards, who support re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have warned protestors that they would pursue "a decisive and revolutionary confrontation with rioters."

Moussavi decried the intensified security measures and said that such measures would just lead to the escalation of the current crisis.

A commentary published on the defeated presidential candidate's website said all the security measures would not change the fact that "there is a huge difference between silencing the people and persuading them."

Meanwhile Iran's powerful Guardian Council, a legislative body in charge of approving election results, said its final verdict on the elections would be disclosed on Wednesday.

The council's spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodeai said Monday that the request by two candidates - Moussavi and moderate cleric Mehdi Karroubi - for the annulment of the results and the holding of new elections would be rejected.
