Johannesburg - FIFA turned down an appeal by the Egyptian Football Association Tuesday against the red card shown to Mohamed Al Muhamadi by referee Howard Webb in Monday's 4-3 Confederations Cup defeat to Brazil. Football's ruling body stated that Webb made the decision to send off Al Muhamadi for handling the ball on the line after a discussion with his assistant who had a clear view of the incident.
The African champions came from two goals down in Monday's game in Bloemfontein to level at 3-3 before Al Muhammadi handled Lucio's shot on the line in the last minute to hand Kaka the task of winning the game from the spot.
Egyptian assistant coach Shawki Gharib revealed after the game that the objection was not to the decision itself and the subsequent sending off, but because Webb initially appeared to whistle for a corner and that the final call seemed to come from the fourth official watching on the television.
"Since when are decisions allowed to come from the monitor? We thought the final decision was to be made on the field. We want to clarify the regulation," he said.
