Hamburg - Jermaine Jones wants to play for the United States national team in the future and won't represent Germany any more, the German football federation said on Friday. The Schalke 04 midfielder has won three caps for Germany, but these were in friendlies and no official matches such as qualifiers, which makes him eligible to change under new rules introduced two weeks ago by the ruling body FIFA.
Jones, 27, has an American father, a German mother and dual citizienship. The Sport Bild weekly said on its website that Jones decided on the switch after not being nominated for two recent matches in Asia.
"Yes, I have decided in favour of the United States," Sport Bild quoted him as saying.
Germany coach Joachim Loew said: "We have taken notice of Jermaine Jones' decision and accept it. I wish him all the best for his sporting future."
