Tehran - Iran's football chief has set dates for two friendly games later this year against the United States national team, the website of the news network Press TV reported Monday. The two sides agreed on the games at a meeting between Iranian Iranian Football Federation (FFI) President Ali Kafashian and his US counterpart Sunil Gulati on the sidelines of a FIFA meeting in the Bahamas.
The first game is scheduled for October 10 in Tehran's Azadi Stadium and the second on November 14 in Los Angeles, California, home to a large number of US citizens of Iranian origin.
FFI President Kafashian noted that the dates could be changed if Iran was forced to play World Cup play-off games later this year.
Iranian Vice-President and sports chief Mohammad Ali-Abadi agreed last month to the friendlies after political aspects were cleared.
Iran and the US have had no diplomatic ties for over three decades and several efforts in the recent years to end the estrangement have failed.
While Washington accused Iran as terrorism sponsor and party of the "axis of evil," Tehran brands the US as "Great Satan" and enemy of Islam and Muslims worldwide.
New US President Barack Obama, however, appears ready to resume talks with Iran over issues such as Iran's nuclear programme and cooperation in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Iran claimed a prestigious 2-1 win over the US at the 1998 World Cup in France which was celebrated at that time in Iran as more than just a sports victory.
