Geneva - The World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday that 73 countries have officially reported 25,288 cases of the new H1N1 flu strain, including 139 deaths. The United States had 13,217 infections, with 27 deaths caused by the virus that is also known as swine flu. Mexico reported 5,717 cases, including 106 deaths. Canada had 2,115 laboratory confirmed cases, including three deaths.
Outside of North America, Australia was hardest hit, with 1,051 cases, none lethal. Chile had 411 cases and Japan had 410.
In Europe, 557 cases were reported in Britain and Spain had 291 infections, according to data available on the WHO website.
WHO officials have deemed the virus to be "moderate" in its severity.
