Sydney - Troubled Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds has been sent home from the World Twenty20 cricket tournament in England for breaking team rules on alcohol consumption and other infractions, Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said Thursday. "In isolation, the breaches that I am talking about are not serious, but in the scheme of things, in the scheme of history, they are enough for it to be the final straw," Sutherland said at a press conference in Melbourne.
It's almost certain Symonds' international career is over after the latest in a long line of off-field indiscretions.
The British-born 33-year-old was suspended from the national team in September for going fishing instead of attending a team meeting.
Symonds was suspended in 2005 for arriving for a match under the influence of alcohol.
He received counselling earlier this year and was part of the One Day series win over Pakistan in Dubai in April.
He was picked in the World Twenty20 squad after playing in the Indian Premier League.
Symonds' Cricket Australia contract is also under review, Sutherland said.
