Moenchengladbach, Germany - Former German international Michael Frontzeck has been appointed coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach. "This is emotionally a great moment for me," Frontzeck said Wednesday at a formal presentation.
"I was born here and Moenchengladbach is my football home."
Frontzeck, who succeeds Hans Meyer, played a total of 10 years at Moenchengladbach, making 213 league appearances.
The 45-year-old former defender was also assistant coach at the club to Meyer between 2000 and 2003.
Frontzeck was dismissed as coach of Arminia Bielefeld on May 17 shortly before the end of the season. The sacking did not prevent Bielefeld from relegation, while Moenchengladbach just escaped the same fate.
Frontzeck, who also coached Alemannia Aachen, resigning after the club was relegated from the top flight in 2006/2007, has signed a two-year contract.
"I am optimistic we can reach the targets we are aiming for. But we won't be going into the new season saying we want to qualify for the UEFA Cup (Europa League)," he said.
