Alaska man's braided beard takes top prize at world competition

Washington - An Anchorage, Alaska man took top honours at a world competition of facial hair in his home city with his braided chest-length beard, the Anchorage Daily News reported. David Traver was crowned the overall champion of the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships that featured 300 competitors from around the globe competing in 18 individual categories. The competition was dominated by US and German competitors with nine Americans and seven Germans taking home first place awards in various individual categories. A British and a Dutch competitor also took first place honours. Styles ranged from the bushy Hungarian or Wild West moustache to the long English moustache to goatees and the local favourite Alaska Whaler beard. The competition held late Saturday takes place in a different city every two years and this year's event was hosted by the South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club.
